Liberals, progressives and other dreamers who want a true democracy in America often lament how race and the color line have interfered with and too often made stillborn a unified struggle that advances the collective interests of all poor and working class people in America, and around the world. At present this takes the form of how Bernie Sanders and other liberals bemoan how "identity politics" have become too prominent on the left and among the Democratic Party. Of course this formulation is imprecise and myopic: all politics is identity politics; it is only when black and brown people as well as gays, lesbians, women, and other marginalized groups organize for their full and equal rights that somehow "politics" needs a modifier which diminishes the legitimacy of a given claim on rights and justice.
Because African Americans made up approximately four-fifths of the Republican Party inthe alliance between Populists and Republicans could be traced back to black power. The Democrats were not only concerned with black office holders, however. White political officials who ascended to power on the fusionist ticket also did so because of the black vote.
Yet there is much more than meets the eye. This means that race is not based on some innate and immutable scientific fact, but rather, that this concept describes the social meanings ascribed to racial categories. Race is a category that groups together people who share biological traits that a society believes to be socially significant from genetics to phenotypic characteristics.

Three of the most prominent ones are racism, sexism and homophobia. Racism is the belief that one race is superior to others and the others are naturally inferior. Sexism is the belief, mostly by males, that one sex is superior to the other.
The matrix of domination or matrix of oppression is a sociological paradigm that explains issues of oppression that deal with raceclassand genderwhich, though recognized as different social classifications, are all interconnected.
